Mauritius Opera Festival
4th to 13th September 2009

The opera history of the island of Mauritius, situated in the Indian Ocean, dates back to 1790. Stars of the European opera like Georges Thill used to perform at the Theatre of Port-Louis built in 1822 and at the bigger Plaza Theatre in Rose-Hill built in 1933. The golden age of the opera in Mauritius came to an end in the 60’s. Both theatres are presently under renovation.

The Mauritian opera tradition, which is more than 200 years old, is being revived. The 2009 feature is the production of Bizet’s Pearl Fishers which will be performed at Swami Vivekananda International Conference Centre next September by a prominent international cast.
The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will be directed by Martin Wettges from Germany.
